|The Recycling Oil Saves the Environment (Rose) Foundation, a nonprofit organi- sation that manages environmentally acceptable collection, storage and recycling of used lubricating oil in South Africa, has collected more than 400-million litres of used oil since its formation in April 1994.
Established by key lubricant companies in South Africa after the government withdrew support for the used rerefining industry in 1994, the purpose of the foundation is to protect the environment by preventing irresponsible dumping and burning of used lubricating oil.
The foundation’s primary objective is to collect as much used lubricating oil as possible and to add as much value to this oil by recy- cling it within the strictest environmental standards.
The Rose Foundation encourages cleaner oil production and aims to recycle or reprocess used lube oil into economically valuable products.
The foundation also facilitated the formation of the National Oil Recycling Association of South Africa (Nora-SA) in November 2005. All members of Nora-SA are encouraged to have their operations evaluated regularly by environmental auditors funded by the Rose Foundation, and all processors and disposers of used oil are asked to work towards ISO 14001 accreditation.
